Friday Featured Vendor: Tammi with Polka Dot Cupcakery {Columbus Wedding Vendor}

Jac and I were chatting the other day about how many amazing vendors we know in the Columbus area and decided that it was be great to share them with all of our followers. We have gathered up some of our favorites and will be posting a featured vendor every Friday so be sure to check back to see who we are talking with next week!

This week we are featuring Tammi of Polka Dot Cupcakery. We met Tammi years ago when we were all part of a group of woman business owners. Immediately, the three of us hit it off and have become good friends over the years. Tammi’s cupcakes are amazing and have been the centerpiece of just about every life event since…baby showers, birthday parties, anniversaries, our studio open house, you name it.

We sat down over some yummy cupcakes at her adorable bakery in Upper Arlington. After a lot of chatting about life, school, kids, etc and a lot of laughing, we finally got down to business.

Jac: Who are you? Tell us about your business…what is it, how did you get started, etc.

Tammi: You already know this!! Well way back in 1973…no, um. My business is Polka Dot Cupcakery. Honestly, I make cupcakes because I got laid off while pregnant with my youngest child. I has always baked so my husband, Dwayne, said, “You should make your cupcakes and sell them!”. I thought, “there is no way anyone is going to buy them” but I decided to give it a shot. We created a website and one person bought them and then another and another and another…and now we have a shop!

Jac: How did you get into making cupcakes for weddings?

Tammi: Thanks a good question! I believe my first wedding just came from a bride who had googled “cupcakes in Columbus”, found us, and came in to do a tasting. I had never marketed anything for weddings. They just came to me.

Jac: What do you find most brides want? Are you seeing trends?

Tammi: No. I really don’t see any trends as far as flavors or decoration. The only real trend is the size. The brides always want the minis because they are cute and easy for guests to eat. Oh, and they all seem to like my prices! Hahaha!

Amy: Well that’s always good!!

Tammi: Yeah! But, no, Brides aren’t really doing much extra decoration anymore other than different colored sprinkles. I think its just because the minis are just so cute and little on their own that they really don’t need extra fondant or anything.

Amy: Do most Brides do a special small cake to display on top of the cupcake display to use for the official “cake cutting” at the ceremony or is that not as important to Brides these days?

Tammi: I would say about half of the Brides want a small cake with a topper. Some opt for using two jumbo cupcakes, one for the Bride and one for the Groom. Other couples don’t have anything special other than the cupcakes. If they do decide to have a small cake on top, they usually provide the custom cake topper for the cake. I have made a few custom cake toppers but it isn’t all that common. Most of them just supply something they have found on their own.

Jac: What is your favorite part about working with Brides and doing wedding cupcakes?

Tammi: Well its really funny because I would say the majority of our Bride and Grooms are now regular customers in the shop! We see them time and time again for birthdays, baby showers, parties, etc. Some of them have even become good friends with us since doing their wedding so it’s really cool to meet all these people that later on become regular customers and even friends.

Jac: What are some challenges you face with weddings? Bridezillas?

Tammi: No!! Actually I haven’t had ANY Bridezillas!

Amy: Oh really?? That’s good!!

Tammi: I think it is mostly because they are cupcakes. I feel like Brides who want cupcakes for their weddings tend to be more laid back Brides. I have been really lucky and haven’t really had to deal with anything too crazy. The funniest thing is the Mother-of-the-Bride is usually the one who needs some convincing. They don’t see cupcakes as being for a wedding.

Amy: Because they want the traditional wedding cake?

Tammi: Yes. They think it should be a “real wedding cake” but eventually they get on board with the cupcakes.

PDW_2014AUG_BLOG-019

Jac: Okay, so if I were a Bride interested in ordering cupcakes for my wedding, what would be my next step? What would I need to do first? Please tell me it includes EATING some of these delicious cupcakes!

Tammi: Typically, you would contact us to schedule a tasting. Brides chose 6 different flavors to sample that they want to try. They come in and sample the cupcakes, look through photos of other wedding displays I have done and chat about the style of wedding. After the tasting, if they decide to book us for the wedding, they pay 30% down for the deposit, sign the contract and they are good to go!

Amy: Is there a maximum number of flavors you will do for a wedding?

Tammi: They can have as many as they want but I usually recommend a certain number based on the wedding size. It is possible to have TOO many options and it gets overwhelming for the guests.

Amy: How are the cupcakes displayed for the wedding? Do you provide displays? Can the Brides provide their own display to fit with the theme of the wedding? How does that all work?

Tammi: I deliver and set up all the cupcakes. That is all done by me so Brides don’t have to worry about the actual set up while they are busy doing everything else that day. Sometimes the Brides have the florists set up around the cupcakes. We do offer a variety of cake stands that can be rented for the wedding or the couple can chose to provide the entire set up for us. It can be customized for each couple to make sure the display fits with the overall feeling of the wedding.

Jac: Okay let’s talk money. How much should the average Bride expect to pay for cupcakes?

Tammi: Probably around $400 on average. It will depend on the size of the wedding. The average wedding size that we see is around 150 guests. We have done weddings for 40 people and we have done weddings for 300 people. We can do it all regardless of the size.

Jac: What sets you apart from other bakeries?

Tammi: Hahaha! You’ve met me and my cupcakes are awesome! You guys have had them!

Amy: Oh my gosh…yes!! You know WE are huge fans! What about someone who hasn’t had one of your cupcakes yet?

Tammi: Hahaha no, seriously though…our prices are probably the best of any of the storefronts in town. Everything is made fresh here in the bakery everyday so the day of the wedding is the day I am in here making your cupcakes. I use good quality ingredients in all of our cupcakes and nothing is ever pre-made.

Amy: Do you offer special cupcakes for guests with dietary concerns such as gluten free or vegan?

PDW_2014AUG_BLOG-023

Tammi: Yes! We do not do sugar free…so don’t ask but yes we do offer gluten free and vegan as special orders.

Amy: Okay, well that is about all my questions and I am dying to dig into this Key Lime Cupcake so I think we are done for now! Thanks so much for the cupcakes and taking the time to answer our questions.

Tammi: No problem…any time!

Session Faves: Janelle and J. Engagement Session. {Columbus Wedding Photographer}

I have known Janelle for quite some time and we have spent many happy hours, texts, and tears talking about life and love and everything in between. When she told me about meeting J a while back – I couldn’t have been happier for her. And as the small world that it is would have it – J and I have several mutual friends, so I already knew this guy had to be good people.               I didn’t actually get to meet J until just recently, and it was as if I were meeting an old friend I hadn’t talked to in forever. Seeing Janelle and J together truly makes you believe in “happily ever after” – they are so in love and you can see it just in the way they look at each other. And I don’t think there’s anything more magical than that.

So when we contacted by Janelle about photographing their wedding – we were thrilled! It’s going to be a low-key ceremony in downtown Marietta next month and I think it’ll be beautiful! And while they insisted that they didn’t need engagement photos – we insisted the opposite. So on a very rainy day last week we met at the North Market (after the rain derailed our original plans) and had such an amazing engagement session with these two. While they thought they were being cheesy and awkward, they were actually being the perfect subjects to photograph!

We cannot wait for the wedding and we wish them a lifetime of happiness together, y’all deserve it!

Wednesday morning coffee date…

Screen Shot 2014-06-18 at 10.00.34 AM

Well, we made it to Wednesday. This week just seems to be dragging. Anyone else? I’m gonna just go ahead and blame it on my four day weekend/mini vacation with the boy last weekend and that this is an extra long week.

But… in an exciting way! We have another wedding this weekend! This one is back in my hometown – which I’m looking forward to, I get to spend some much needed time with the family as well as shooting this wedding! ANDDD we just booked another wedding last night – with one of our dear friends, nonetheless! This is a fall wedding being held in downtown Marietta. It’s going to be absolutely gorgeous and we are so excited to work with Janelle and J!

Y’all, I know we all complained and cried all winter because of the brutal cold – but seriously, we don’t need this crazy humidity. Can’t mother nature work out some sort of compromise? I don’t know, maybe like the weather we had this past weekend? My hair just can’t take all the humidity – good hair days are just something of the past now. *Sigh* I suppose I’ll just be grateful that we don’t have 10 inches of snow outside…

So Amy and I have been throwing around this “Celebrate You” photo session idea for quite a few months. The premise being that just because one doesn’t have a fiancé, baby, family, or any of those on the way – doesn’t mean you can’t get pretty (or handsome) and have a photo session to well, Celebrate YOU – and all your accomplishments thus far. I put the bug in her ear last spring because I really wanted to do something like that – but of course I was using the excuses of “I need to lose 10 pounds.” “I need a little tan.” “It’s too cold out.” “It’s too humid out.” Excuses. That’s all they were – because I was terrified of being on the other side of the camera. But seriously, I think this is such a fun idea to just really be proud of where you are in life, things you’ve overcame (no matter how big or small), and be able to look back 20 years from now and see amazing photos aside from your instagram pics!

What do you think? Would you do a Celebrate You session?

Well it’s time to start prepping for ANOTHER wedding consult this afternoon! Wish us luck!

Have a fabulous Wednesday!

Ohio Marriage Caravan Video April 11, 2014 – photographed by Amy Clark Studios

Ohio Marriage Caravan Video- photography by Amy Clark Studios

{Click the link above}

This past weekend we traveled with the #marriagecaravan from Columbus to Chicago so 3 couples could say their “I do’s” and make it legal. We had met the wonderful ladies prior to the trip and we were so excited to get to photograph this special day. We started the journey at the Burnham Hotel in downtown Chicago where all the girls got ready for their day in ONE, tiny hotel room. I assisted with their hair and Amy photographed the details {power team, we are!}. Once we finished up there we headed to the Cook County Clerk’s Office to obtain the marriage licenses from there we went to the courthouse where they were legally married! After all the excitement of those couple of hours we strolled the streets of Chicago for a bit to get some portraits before heading to Andersonville for dinner.

It was a whirlwind afternoon… but one thing is for certain – Love is Love. No matter what.

We want to congratulate all the ladies on their marriage and wish them a lifetime of happiness!

You may remember our engagement session with Amy and John this past summer… well, the day of their wedding finally arrived and it was wonderful! It was such a beautiful, but very cold day…  however, we were still able to get plenty of fantastic shots of the happy couple and their wedding party! It was truly a special moment being able to photograph Amy and John on their special day. John is one of my oldest friends and I’m so glad I was able to be a part of the wedding festivities!

Session Faves: {I do} Krista + Billy. 6.29.12 {Columbus Wedding Photographer}

Last Friday we were invited to join the festivities as Krista and Billy tied the knot. Amy has been friends with Krista for quite some time and when Krista called just a few short weeks ago, requesting that Amy shoot her wedding – we couldn’t have been more excited! We packed up and hit the road at 5:30am last Friday and arrived in Sardinia, Ohio just a little after 8. The day was HOTT (95 degrees to be exact) but still so filled with love and excitement as they enjoyed their big day! A big warm congratulations goes out to Krista and Billy! Thank you for having us with you on your beautiful day!

Session Faves: Amy and Alex. Relive the Moment. {Columbus Wedding Photographer}

This session was a lot of fun! We put Amy in front of the camera instead of behind it. {It was shot by yours truly – but she did all the editing, of course!}. We did this session for their 12 year anniversary. Amy and Alex weren’t thrilled with their wedding photos so this was a good opportunity to document how they’ve changed in the past 12 years. They met in art school, way back in the day – so we thought it would be fun to get some paint and get messy with it! And they did a fabulous job at that getting messy thing! 🙂

Session Faves: Bobby and Candace. Relive the Moment. {Columbus Wedding Photographer}

On Monday evening, we did another Relive the Moment session at Creekside in Gahanna. We shot with Candace and Bobby – I’ve known Candace for several years and when she asked about doing this session we were so excited to work with them. They are an adorable couple and let us play around with several different ideas. We were ecstatic on how the shoot turned out and are excited to get more of these sessions scheduled!
